Explosive Clash: DDG Slams The Shade Room for “Tearing Black Men Down” Amid Legal Battle With Halle Bailey
The BET Awards 2025 may have celebrated Black excellence, but behind the scenes, a storm was brewing. Rapper and YouTuber DDG (Darryl Dwayne Granberry Jr.) delivered an emotional and fiery response to The Shade Room following fellow streamer Kai Cenat’s on-camera confrontation with one of their reporters at the red carpet event. The moment quickly went viral, and what started as an interview turned into a flashpoint in a larger conversation about media bias, mental health, and how Black men are portrayed in the spotlight.
During a recent livestream, DDG didn’t hold back. Responding to a now-viral video of Kai Cenat defending him at the BET Awards, he accused the media platform of deliberate character assassination. “Y’all tear Black men down every day,” Darryl said, visibly frustrated. “You’re supposed to be uplifting Black people, but I don’t see you posting any other race in a negative light — only Black men.”
A Public Show of Support from Kai Cenat
At the heart of the controversy is a brief but impactful moment at the BET Awards where Kai Cenat, one of the internet’s most popular streamers, took The Shade Room to task for what he called “messy reporting” on Darryl’s ongoing legal battle with singer-actress Halle Bailey.
“You’re spreading fake narratives,” Cenat told the interviewer, referencing false information originally reported about Darryl’s temporary restraining order request being denied. In reality, the court granted portions of Darryl’s TRO, and the initial headline was later amended. But by then, the damage — at least in Darryl’s eyes — had been done.
“They say it’s a court of law,” Darryl said on stream, “but y’all spread a fake statement for a whole day straight. Y’all couldn’t pay me to support y’all. Not for a million dollars.”
The Core of the Dispute
The drama stems from DDG’s high-profile and increasingly volatile legal battle with his ex, The Little Mermaid star Halle Bailey. In May 2025, Bailey filed a temporary restraining order (TRO) against the rapper, alleging physical, emotional, and financial abuse throughout their relationship. She claimed DDG assaulted her during an altercation, slamming her head against a steering wheel and chipping her tooth.
In her filing, Bailey wrote:
“Throughout our relationship, Darryl has been and continues to be physically, verbally, emotionally, and financially abusive towards me. I am seeking orders to protect myself and our son Halo from his ongoing abuse.”
The court granted Bailey’s request for a TRO and awarded her sole custody of their 18-month-old son.
DDG Fires Back
On June 4, DDG responded with a TRO request of his own, arguing that Bailey posed an “imminent emotional and psychological risk” to their child due to repeated threats of self-harm. As part of his filing, DDG included screenshots of alleged messages from Bailey referencing suicidal thoughts, one of which reportedly read, “U KNOW IM ACTIVELY SUICIDAL AND STRUGGLING.”
However, when DDG sought to restrict Bailey from traveling to Italy with their son for a film shoot, the judge denied that motion, citing a lack of evidence that international travel would endanger the child. Despite this, the court did grant DDG’s TRO request against Bailey — a detail DDG and his team were quick to emphasize after The Shade Room inaccurately reported otherwise.
Bailey Responds to the Allegations
Halle Bailey has since fired back in her own legal response, denying that she poses any danger to her child and accusing DDG of manipulating her mental health struggles for legal leverage.
According to Billboard, Bailey stated:
“DDG has exaggerated, lied, and misconstrued not only the history of our relationship but our parenting and my mental health. I’ve been vocal about my depression and previous thoughts of suicide, but I’ve received treatment. I am and always have been fully capable of parenting our son.”
A Pattern of Media Targeting?
This isn’t the first time DDG has accused The Shade Room of targeted reporting. He previously called them out for repeatedly posting content that cast him in a negative light — including footage of influencer India Love dancing on him at Kai Cenat’s June 10 pool party, just days after news of his legal filings broke.
In his stream, DDG said bluntly:
“That’s like the main f*king core content that y’all have — how can we tear a Black man down further and further? That s**t is weird.”
A Larger Conversation
The unfolding saga between DDG, Bailey, and The Shade Room has ignited a broader conversation about how media platforms cover Black celebrities, particularly Black men. Are outlets like The Shade Room holding people accountable, or are they feeding off controversy and trauma for clicks?
Kai Cenat’s public confrontation was more than just loyalty to a friend — it was a call for accountability. And DDG’s raw reaction added fuel to a growing fire about how fame, mental health, and media sensationalism intersect in the age of livestreams and viral headlines.
As both DDG and Halle Bailey prepare for their court hearing on June 24, one thing is clear: this drama is far from over, and the internet — along with media watchdogs — will be watching closely.
