Kodak Black is currently one of the game’s most promising up-and-coming rappers. He obviously has no issue spitting out lyrics. In “Kutthroat Bill: Vol.1,” Kodak performs in a polished yet worn-out manner. Anyone who believes in Lamar’s judgment should not question Kodak’s magnetism, and his rapping has undoubtedly improved, but Kodak doesn’t provide anything novel on this album: crime, women, drugs, and money.
The problem with Kodak’s most recent album is that he doesn’t actually say all that much. Whether it’s masked by a more rhythmic sound or a simpler trap rhythm, Kodak frequently resorts to simple and uninteresting terms that don’t enhance our experience. This is shown right away in Kodak’s verse from the song “Slay Like Santa,” where he says, “They respect me like Santa, they know imma slay (sleigh).”
The fact that the songs “Game from Pluto” and “Demand My Respect” sound like parts 1 and 2 of a tedious trap serial is telling of the CD as a whole. The instrumentals lack catchy melodies while being essential to the genre Kodak is in and frequently being outdated. In “I Can’t Sleep,” Kodak Black effectively utilizes his horrible singing voice. Normally, I don’t like Kodak Black’s vocal performances in songs. “I don’t mind his singing I Can’t Sleep” because of it.
It blends well with the song’s laid-back speed and his unfiltered raps, as well as his subtle/effortless gangster subject matter. Lil Crix seems to be fine, despite the fact that I’m So Awesome and 300 Blackout are both better.
