Big Wins in The 2021 BET Awards
In the Microsoft Theatre Los Angeles California Sunday June 27 was a big day for Hip Hop as artists streamed in to receive accolades and celebrate the annual event. This Year’s theme was “Year of the Black Woman.” The them was meant to celebrate the contributions of black women in the history of Hip Hop and further acknowledgement to black women’s contribution in American history. To go with the theme of the event, the organizers chose Taraji P. Henson one of the major actors in empire to host the monumental event. The Sunday’s event was unique in that since the Covid-19 struck the Globe, this was their first live audience event.
Among the Big wins of the event include Queen Latifah who was earlier nominated and received the Lifetime Achievement Award. Queen Latifah is among the pioneers of Female Hip Hop in the U.S and was celebrated as the first woman to venture in the then male dominated industry. It has to be acknowledged that black woman has made monumental contributions in shaping American history, politics, and social cultural aspects of our society.
According to Connie Orlando who is the Executive Vice President of Music Programming & Strategy at BET, “We are looking forward to spotlighting and celebrating Black women during this year’s show, recognizing them for everything they’ve accomplished and applauding them for what’s to come.”
The event was graced by performances from Megan The Stallion, Da-baby, Tyler The Creator, Migos, Methodman, Cardi B, and several other Hip Hop heavy- weight.
Other performances include lIL Baby and Kirk Franklin’s as they hyped the festivities by performing their “We Win” Soundtrack. Migos followed with his “Straightening” and “Type Shit” from their new Culture III Album. Cardi-B created a rare scenario with an intriguing show of her pregnant belly.
