The peaceful spirit of a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas, was shattered earlier this year by a devastating act of violence. Now, Karmelo Anthony—the teenager accused of fatally stabbing 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during the event—will face a jury trial on June 1, 2026.
According to local outlet KFDM, jury selection and proceedings are set to begin at 9 a.m. that day. Anthony, who was also 17 at the time of the stabbing, was arrested shortly after the fatal incident and initially held on a $1 million bond. That amount was later reduced to $250,000, and he was released pending trial.
The case has sent shockwaves through the Frisco community and beyond, drawing national attention for both the brutality of the attack and the circumstances surrounding it.
Collin County Prosecutors Move Forward Against Karmelo Anthony
Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis announced in June that a Grand Jury had returned an indictment against Anthony, formally charging him with first-degree murder. The decision followed weeks of investigation and evidence presentation.
“Earlier this spring, our community was shaken by what happened at a school track meet in Frisco—the violent loss of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf,” Willis said in a video statement posted to Facebook on June 24.
“My team has been presenting evidence to the grand jury, and today I summarized that evidence and asked them to return a first-degree murder indictment against Karmelo Anthony—which they did. With that indictment, the case now moves formally into the court system.”
Willis emphasized the seriousness of the charge and vowed to pursue justice with full diligence. He also acknowledged the emotional weight the case has carried nationwide.
“We understand that this case has struck a deep nerve across the country,” he said. “We’re committed to ensuring justice is served for Austin and for his loved ones.”
He concluded by reminding the public that Anthony, like all defendants, is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court. If convicted, Anthony could face life in prison.
A Mother’s Anguish and a Twin Brother’s Heartbreak
As the legal case proceeds, the human cost of this tragedy remains raw. Details about the altercation emerged in media reports, painting a heartbreaking picture of a young life cut short over a seemingly trivial dispute.
According to The Daily Mail, the confrontation began when Metcalf asked Anthony to move, reportedly because he was sitting in the wrong seat. What followed was a sudden escalation that ended in deadly violence.
Metcalf was stabbed in the heart and died in the arms of his twin brother, Hunter, who spoke about the horrifying moment during an emotional appearance on The Will Cain Show. Their mother, Meghan, also participated in the interview.
“I whipped my head around, and then all of a sudden I see him running down the bleachers just grabbing his chest,” Hunter recounted. “I put my hand on there, tried to make it stop, and I grabbed his head and I looked in his eyes. I just saw his soul leave—and it took my soul too.”
His voice shook as he described the moment no sibling should ever have to witness. For Hunter and Meghan, the trauma is ongoing, and the road to healing has only just begun.
Police Response and Community Mourning
The Frisco Police Department responded to the incident on the morning of April 2 at David Kuykendall Stadium. Officers arrived at the scene around 10 a.m. after a fight was reported between two students. When they reached the location, they found Metcalf suffering from serious stab wounds.
Emergency responders, including both police and fire personnel, immediately began life-saving measures. CPR was performed, and emergency blood was administered on-site before Metcalf was transported to a nearby hospital.
Despite all efforts, he was later pronounced dead.
