Doja Cat Talks About Being A Rapper And Nicki Minaj’s Influence
Doja Cat claims that winning a Grammy in the rap category would mean “everything” to her. Despite hip hop purists debating whether she is a rapper. Earlier this year, her collaboration with Saweetie, “Best Friend,” got nominated for a Grammy for Best Rap Song.
“The only person who should be rating hip-hop is an OG or somebody who is respected in hip-hop,” Doja requested a fresh profile from Elle.
She revealed why she enjoys rap music: “When I was little, that’s kind of all I listened to,” she named Busta Rhymes and Lauryn Hill. “I’ve rapped since the beginning, and I really couldn’t even sing that well to begin with I got a lot better. I use my voice as a tool to create these worlds, and it’s fine if people think that I can’t rap.”
Remy Ma is one well-known figure that claims Doja isn’t a rapper. In a March appearance on Drink Champs, the legendary rapper commended Doja for making “dope recordings,” but claimed her music shouldn’t be among rap music.
Doja later recognized Nicki Minaj as one of her key influences in the interview. They previously worked together on a remix of Doja’s “Say So.”
“I think her as a businesswoman really inspired me,” According to Doja. “The way Nicki can carry herself felt almost alien to me, because I was kind of a little runty kid, trapped in her room, just watching YouTube videos. And back then I was like, ‘Damn, that’s dope.’”
